Now, here’s what you asked us for... your first sadhana!

Women enjoying a wonderful Womanheart semimar! Our Womanheart Seminar earlier this month was a joy in so many regards. First off came the “first” – on Friday night when men joined us for the first time ever. We were 40 great souls that night, addressing the nature of relationships meditating together, chanting and then laying out to enjoy the deep sounds of the healing gong.

Then, with 33 women attending the Saturday class, we tackled the subject of suspended memories, as the Master, Yogi Bhajan, called the thousands of events we stuff and never process. We went on to use breath and other techniques to correct the loss of self identity and to recover ourselves from the chameleon tendency that inhabits us all.

Then on Sunday morning, starting at 4:45 a.m., a number of women from the seminar took up my invitation to join my husband and me at our home for sadhana, which is a daily spiritual practice of prayer, yoga, chanting and meditation that wakes up, charges up and aligns body, mind and soul.

I have heard from many women since then who are enthusiastically using the techniques they learned. Many of them want to know how to set up a sadhana for themselves. I'll describe for you a "simplified sadhana" that everyone can do! The best time to do sadhana is between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., known as “the amrit vela” when the “amrit” or nectar of the master glands can be prompted through meditation to flow. It will set your day strongly for you.

The classic Aquarian Sadhana which Yogi Bhajan gave us in 1991 to carry us into the Aquarian Age takes about two hours. I will suggest a much shorter, simplified version for beginners.

The full sadhana starts with the mystical sounds of Jaapji, a long chanted prayer than can take 15-20 minutes. Jaapji literally wakes the soul. It is chanted in the same Sanskrit-based language of the ethers that is used in all our chanted meditations. This language removes you from the Earth-bound energies that infuse our mind, allowing you to release memories and emotions that burden the soul in its desire to reach the heavens. One sign of this release comes when you may find yourself releasing tears during a chant.

Here’s a simplified sadhana:

1. Get a CD of Jaapji (I recorded one and there are others) and play it as you are quietly readying yourself to start. Slowly start to learn a few verses.

2. Next, “tune in” using the Adi Mantra “Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo.” Imagine yourself surrounded by all your Womanheart sisters chanting along!

3. Now do a short yoga set - 15-20 minutes is good for starters.

4. Relax by laying out for 5 minutes.

5. Then, using an Aquarian Sadhana chant CD, chant the “Wahe Guru, Wahe Jio” meditation for 11 minutes. The recorded chant is longer and later on, as you relax into it, you may want to continue for the full 22 minutes.

6. After the beautiful meditation read a sacred prayer or inspirational message taken from Peace Lagoon or the Nitnem or any book you look to as sacred.

Please do not neglect this prayful reading. Yogi Bhajan often told us that, in addition to all the physical, mental and emotional benefits of doing sadhana, the whole point of doing a sadhana was to prepare us to hear and to understand the message God wanted us to receive for the day. So, opening an inspirational text of any kind to a random page gives us that message.

7. To close, sing the Longtime Sunshine song followed by three long "Sat Nams".

The total time for this simplified sadhana is about 45 - 55 minutes.

For those who want a personal program tied to their numerology, a session with me can give you that. If you live in the Phoenix area you can also enjoy group sadhana any morning at 3:40 a.m. at our yoga ashram (Yoga Phoenix.com) or come here on Saturday morning at 4:45 a.m.

Enjoy a brighter, lighter life every day!

Bless you in all ways always,

Sangeet
